Several hurt in stairway collapse in Salvo

Several people were injured, including three who were transported to the Outer Banks Hospital, on Thursday night when an outside stairway stairway collapsed at a house in Salvo.

According to Dare County officials, the incident happened around 8 p.m. in the 2600 block of Otter Way in Salvo.

Dare County manager Bobby Outten said up to eight or nine people were standing on a stairway leading from a lower-level deck to an upper deck at the house when the stairs collapsed.

Outten said three people were taken to the hospital with injuries that were reported to be non-threatening and several others refused treatment at the scene.

The Dare County building inspector was at the house, which is a rental, this morning to be sure to investigate the incident and to be sure the rest of the structure is safe for the people who are staying there.
