Widespread Power Outage Affects All Of Hatteras and Ocracoke
CHEC will work to bring the diesel generators online, however because of the current load, the plant will likely only be able to supply Buxton with power.
This will only be possible if load is at minimal levels and everyone is conserving. To minimize load, Buxton residents and visitors, please turn off AC units and minimize other electrical usage.
A power outage occurred on Thursday morning at 4:30 a.m. that is affecting all of Hatteras and Ocracoke islands.
The crew of the Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative was dispatched immediately to identify the cause.
The issue was determined to be a fault in a transmission cable that is strapped to the Bonner Bridge. At this time, there is no report on what caused the fault.
“They are evaluating, which is the next step, and hopefully we will have a time frame soon,” said Laura Ertle, Director of Public Relations for CHEC.
As of 8:30 a.m. CHEC is advising people on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands to be prepared for an extended power outage. Island Free Press will continue to provide updates as soon as they become available.
