Three Campgrounds at CHNS Close as a Result of Non-Resident Evacuation Orders
Due to damaged underground electrical transmission cables near Oregon Inlet, Hyde and Dare Counties have issued mandatory evacuation orders for visitors on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands. The orders have been issued to protect life safety during this period of lost and unreliable electrical service.
Information on Dare County’s mandatory visitor evacuation order can be found here: http://www.darenc.com/Home/Components/News/News/1682/17
The Cape Point Campground, Frisco Campground, and Ocracoke Campground will close at noon on Saturday, July 29, 2017 and remain closed until the county’s evacuation orders are lifted. The Oregon Inlet Campground remains open; however, it is expected to fill to capacity this weekend. Visitor Centers, ORV Permit Offices, and other facilities on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands will remain open unless excessive heat necessitates a closure. All ORV routes will remain open. ORV permits will be sold on a cash-only basis until power is restored. ORV permits may also be purchased any time online at http://recreation.gov.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore appreciates the remarkable efforts being made by the Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative and Tideland Electric Membership Corporation to find temporary power solutions and a long-term repair.
Status updates for campgrounds and other NPS facilities will be listed in the Alerts section of the Seashore’s website at http://www.nps.gov/caha and on its Facebook page at http://facebook.com/ capehatterasns.
