Hatteras / Ocracoke Ferry Remains Closed as NCDOT Works to Fix Highway 12 on Ocracoke Island
The Hatteras / Ocracoke ferry route remains closed for the immediate future due to storm damage to N.C. Highway 12 on the northern end of Ocracoke Island.
A roughly two-mile stretch of the highway was affected by ocean overwash that accompanied Hurricane Florence, and the road just south of the Ocracoke Ferry dock has lost its protective sand dune and is covered by sand and ocean overwash. The extent of pavement damage is still being assessed, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) reports that it is going to take a little time to get the road safe to travel again.
In the meantime, N.C. Highway 12 on Ocracoke Island remains closed between the Pony Pens and the Ferry Terminal, and the Swan Quarter ferry is running for permanent residents, emergency and essential island personnel and vendors.
The Monday (Sept. 17) Swan Quarter ferry schedule is as follows:
The schedule for Tuesday will be released later today.
