BRIDGING THE GAP: Asphalt is underway and
pilings completed for Highway 12 repair

Work continues on repairs to Highway 12, which was breached in several places on northern Hatteras Island by storm tides from Hurricane Irene.
The highway remains closed at the Bonner Bridge, while the North Carolina Department of Transportation and its contractors install a temporary bridge in Pea Island, repair the roadbed, and shore up the S-curves at Rodanthe.
Work has moved along quickly in cooler, drier weather over the weekend, and the highway is getting tantalizingly close to re-opening.
NCDOT now estimates that the roadway could be fully reopened by early to mid-October, depending on weather conditions between now and then.
Much of the remaining work is very weather dependent, but the forecast is for cooler and drier weather all week.
At the Rodanthe breach area, crews finished fine grading the road bed and paving the first layer of asphalt on the southbound lane at the S-curves. The first layer of asphalt base for the northbound lane at the S-curves was also completed. Crews began fine grading the roadbed and placing the first layer of asphalt base at the south end of New New Inlet on Pea Island. All of the sandbags were installed at the S-curves.
At the temporary bridge location on Pea Island, crews finished assembling the remaining 59 feet of bridge truss. On Sunday afternoon, the bridge truss was launched to the south end of the breach to completely span the opening. Hydraulic jacks were set up to lift the bridge truss to allow removal of the temporary roller bearing supports. The truss will then be lowered into position on the concrete footings.
Crews still need to install bridge bearing supports, lower and anchor the bridge in place, and install deck panels.
However the following items are complete at the temporary bridge location:
• Piling: all 82 piles driven.
• Sheet Piling Bulkhead: all 726 linear feet installed.
• Concrete Footings: all 12 footings poured.
• Bridge Truss Spans: all 662 linear feet placed.
