Hatteras Island Highlights of the October 2 BOC Meeting BY JOY CRIST

Share post:

The Dare County Board of Commissioners (BOC) covered a handful of issues that affected Hatteras Islanders at their October 2 meeting in Manteo.

Topics which pertained to the island included the following.

Salvo Cemetery

Commissioners adopted a capital project ordinance for grant funding received through the NC Department of Environmental Quality for the repair, restoration and stabilization of the Salvo Community Cemetery. The bidding process for engineering and construction has begun and necessary permits will be acquired before construction begins. This project is being coordinated with the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Civic Association.

Impacts from Hurricane Maria

Chairman Woodard opened the meeting and reviewed the recent evacuation of Hatteras Island visitors due to Hurricane Maria. He thanked NCDOT personnel who worked non-stop to get the roads cleared of sand and water so the island could reopen to visitors as quickly as possible. He also thanked personnel from the Sheriff’s Office and the National Park Service who manned the checkpoint at Oregon Inlet around the clock. All Commissioners expressed gratitude and were thankful the storm passed offshore with minimal impacts to the area.

Appreciation Luncheon for Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative

Several Commissioners traveled to Hatteras Island on September 25 to share lunch with the Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative staff and express appreciation for the Coop’s outstanding work restoring power to Hatteras Island customers following the cut of the underground transmission line that occurred in July during construction of the new Bonner Bridge. As expressed by a visitor, Cape Hatteras Electric Coop was a consistent beacon of light during the ups and downs of the outage and this challenge showed the true character of the people, organizations, companies and community.
