Erin Vetter has lived in Hatteras village for four years with her husband, Danny. Like many others, they vacationed here from their home in the Washington, D.C. area and one day decided to make the move.
Danny still works, mostly from home, for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, but Erin, who has a degree in art studio photograph but had a career in advertising and marketing, started a new business after the move to Hatteras.
She fell back on her education and her first love, photography, and opened a photography business — Erin Everlee Photography. She does commercial photography, portraits, weddings, and the like.
The Vetters live in the southern area of Hatteras village off Woodall Way with their son, Anders, 4. Erin says their area doesn’t flood much in storms, but that when she saw a foot of water underneath their house on Sunday morning as Hurricane Matthew’s storm surge was assaulting the village, she knew her neighbors would be in trouble.
On Monday morning, Erin took her cameras and headed out into the village to tell the story of storm’s devastation.
“The Outer Banks is special to so many people,” she said on the phone today. “I felt that those people would appreciate seeing what was going on.”
She said she felt that all those folks who love Hatteras Island were just waiting and wondering to see how the village and its residents fared.”
All of the photos in her slide show were taken from the Frisco Pier and the Ferry Dock between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 10.
