Coastal Storm Brings Rain, Winds, and Minor Coastal Flooding to Hatteras Island

Share post:

A coastal storm that began on Thursday brought minor soundside flooding to portions of Hatteras Island on early Saturday morning, however N.C. Highway 12 remained passable throughout the island as of Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m.

The storm also brought strong winds from Thursday through Saturday, with peak wind gusts of 48 mph recorded in Frisco, 47 mph recorded in Ocracoke, and 45 mph recorded at Oregon Inlet. The wind will continue to taper off for the rest of Saturday as the storm progressively moves away from the area.

Up to 3-4 inches of rain was also affiliated with the storm, and soundside flooding was reported in Avon and the tri-villages on early Saturday, however, vehicles were still able to access and drive along N.C. Highway 12 per multiple reports. Due to the rain on top of already saturated ground, ponding on roads is prevalent in a number of areas, and motorists are advised to use caution when travelling.
