Cape Hatteras Class of 2020 Celebrates with Drive-in Graduation Ceremony
The Cape Hatteras Secondary School’s Class of 2020 had a subdued but celebratory graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 11, with a special drive-in event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Though the ceremony was certainly different from previous years, students were treated to warm and breezy weather, and plenty of smiles from immediate family members, at the outdoor celebration.
All graduation speakers were filmed giving their speeches for their school graduation video, and Audra Krieg Photography took pictures of the smiling families on the makeshift stage on the school’s athletic field. (Parents of graduating seniors will be able to download free family photos on the Dare County School’s district website in the near future.)
If conditions allow for the ability to safely hold traditional ceremonies while protecting the health and safety of staff, students, and parents, Dare County Schools will hold a second traditional ceremony for the CHSS Class of 2020 on July 18. This date have been selected to allow a significant amount of time to pass with hopes that North Carolina could move to “phase 3” by July. “While this may not necessarily be the most convenient date for everyone, we are trying to stay away from the July 4 holiday and avoid scheduling too close to August when many graduates will go off to college, the workforce, military, etc.,” stated the Dare County Schools’ superintendent in an emailed message to parents and students.
The Island Free Press will post the graduation video from the June 11 event as soon as it is available, and all of us at the IFP congratulate our CHSS Class of 2020!
