Coastal Flood Advisory in effect for the weekend

Share post:

A strong cold front is expected to move across the coastal North Carolina region on Friday, bringing strong winds, showers, and the potential for coastal flooding and ocean overwash over the weekend, per a Friday morning update from the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City Office.

The front’s impacts will be felt mostly along the coast and across the coastal waters, with strong northerly winds expected late on Friday night. With king tides forecast for this weekend, elevated water levels will lead to some coastal flooding concerns, especially along the Outer Banks and the Crystal Coast, with up to a foot of inundation possible.

Minor ocean overwash will be possible on Saturday and Sunday for vulnerable locations between Oregon Inlet and Cape Hatteras, and mainly during times of high tide.

Minor water level rises are also possible in the southern Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds, and a Coastal Flood Advisory and Small Craft Advisory is in effect through this weekend, from 5 a.m. on Saturday through noon on Sunday.
