Crash involving pair of tractor trailers shuts down Alligator River Bridge
A crash Wednesday morning involving a pair of tractor trailers shut down the Lindsey C. Warren Bridge that carries U.S. 64 over the Alligator River between Dare and Tyrrell counties.
The wreck happened around 8:30 a.m. near the foot of the bridge on the Tyrrell County side.
Dare County Sheriff’s Office Major Jeff Derringer said they estimate the bridge will reopen around 12:30 p.m.
Travelers are advised to use alternate routes, either via U.S. 264 and N.C. 94 through Swan Quarter, or U.S. 158 and U.S. 17 via Elizabeth City.
Heads up, Outer Banks travelers: The Alligator River Bridge on US-64 between Dare and Tyrrell Counties is CLOSED due to a head-on vehicle crash. At this time, we do not have a timeline on when it will reopen. Detours around the bridge are NC94 to US264 and US17 to US158. pic.twitter.com/rkNOHCFAVn

It is time for the NCDOT to replace the Alligator River Bridge with a new 4 lane bridge. This should have priority over the plan to build the Currituck Bridge at Corolla. Also finish the 4 laning of US 64.
