Dare County Library announces multiple holiday events in December
The Dare County Library has announced a schedule of upcoming holiday events that will be held at each of its three branches in December, including traditional favorites—such as a visit from Santa at each location—as well as a gift-wrapping station for kids at the Kill Devil Hills Library and a Polar Express party at the Hatteras Library.
Saturday, December 16, 2023
On Saturday, December 16, 2023 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Hatteras Library will host a Polar Express party inside the library featuring a conductor and train, fun crafts, music and cookies, as well as a visit with Santa. Don’t forget your camera!
Note: On Thursday, December 14, 2023, from 10:30 a.m. 12 p.m., the Hatteras Library will have a special Storytime party for children ages 1-6.
For more information, please call the Hatteras Library, which is located at 57709 N.C. Highway 12, at 252-986-2385.
Tuesday, December 5, 2023
Visit with Duck Santa and his elves at the Kill Devil Hills Library on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Collect treats and games from Santa’s elves as you work your way around the “new” traditional drive-through to meet the man himself. Don’t forget to drop off your “Dear Santa” letter while you’re there. Create your own or pick up a letter to fill out at the front desk of the Kill Devil Hills Library. For more information, please call the Kill Devil Hills Library, which is located at 400 Mustian Street, at 252-441-4331.
Wednesday, December 13, 2023
The Manteo Library will host a free-for-all-ages Christmas party inside the library featuring Santa as the surprise guest. Visitors will have the opportunity to visit and take pictures with Santa on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Join us for crafts, stories, cookies and songs.

Mondays and Thursdays in December
Parents can hide gifts in a closet and wrap them in a single night, but what about the kids? This holiday season, the Kill Devil Hills Library is offering kids of all ages a space to wrap gifts without anyone peeking. The library will provide wrapping paper, bows, gift tags and tissue paper.
The Holiday Gift Wrapping Station doors will be open from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the following dates:
Mondays: December 4, 2023; December 11, 2023 and December 18, 2023
Thursdays: December 7, 2023; December 14, 2023 and December 21, 2023
For more information, please call Tricia Allen or Donna Roark at the Kill Devil Hills Library, which is located at 400 Mustian Street, at 252-441-4331.
All three Dare County Library locations will be closed on Monday, December 25, 2023; Tuesday, December 26, 2023; and Wednesday, December 27, 2023 in honor of the Christmas holiday, as well as on Monday, January 1, 2024 in observance of New Year’s Day. Storytimes with children’s librarians Donna Roark and Tammy Batschelet will resume on Tuesday, January 16, 2024.
“The Dare County Library and its staff are honored to be able to serve the Outer Banks and mainland Dare County communities,” said Dare County Librarian Meaghan Leenaarts Beasley. “These holiday events are one of the many ways we try to thank our supportive patrons and library visitors each year. From all of our library staff at the Kill Devil Hills Library, Manteo Library and Hatteras Library, thank you for a wonderful 2023, and Happy New Year!”
