Due to the significant impacts caused by the winter storm that affected the area overnight, all Dare County offices and facilities will remain closed on Thursday, January 23, 2025. The winter storm brought accumulating snow across the county, as well as icy road conditions and dangerously cold temperatures, making travel and outdoor activity hazardous. The safety of our residents and visitors remains the county’s top priority.

Dare County Emergency Management continues to monitor conditions and advises everyone to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. If you must travel, use extreme caution, ensure your vehicle is properly equipped for winter weather conditions, and be mindful of North Carolina Department of Transportation crews working diligently to clear sand and snow off the roadways. For the latest information on road conditions, visit DriveNC.gov.

Trash Collection Canceled for Thursday

In addition, Dare County Public Works—which provides trash collection for the unincorporated areas of Dare County as well as the Town of Kitty Hawk—has announced that trash collection services scheduled for Thursday, January 23, 2025, have been canceled. Residents are asked to secure their trash containers and avoid placing them at the curb until further notice. Regular trash collection is expected to resume on a modified holiday schedule on Friday, January 24, 2025. For more information, please visit DareNC.gov/PublicWorks.

Dare County offices and facilities are now expected to reopen on Friday, January 24, 2025, depending on weather and road conditions.

Should there be any changes to the schedule, that information will be posted on DareNC.gov/WinterStorm.
