After a cold Wednesday with temperatures in the 30s and 40s along the Outer Banks, an even colder shot of arctic air is expected to arrive this weekend, with temperatures struggling to get above freezing, per an update from the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office.

Wind chills are forecasted to be in the teens on Saturday morning, and in the single digits on Sunday morning throughout eastern North Carolina.

Actual air temperatures are also expected to dip below freezing this weekend, beginning Friday night, with daytime temperatures in the 30s forecast for Saturday and Sunday along with strong northerly winds.

The public is advised to protect outdoor pets and sensitive vegetation as needed, and take precautionary steps to protect pipes from freezing, As temperatures drop, keeping a slow flow of water in faucets may help keep uninsulated pipes from freezing.
