Hyde County offices closing at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday due to winter storm
Hyde County issued the following announcement regarding county-wide closures on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 21.
Hyde County offices and all solid waste convenience sites will be closing at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, due to the approaching winter storm and will remain closed through Wednesday.
Hyde County is currently under a winter storm warning. Forecasted snowfall amounts have increased, and there is high confidence that we will see snow accumulating across Eastern NC starting after sunset tonight and lasting through tomorrow morning. Blowing and drifting snow is expected, and brief blizzard conditions are also possible, especially along the Outer Banks. Accumulation of 6-8 inches across most of mainland Hyde County and 4-6 inches in Ocracoke.
Confidence remains high that extremely cold weather will last through Thursday, with morning lows in the teens and wind chills in the single digits at times. Prolonged periods of cold weather may lead to frozen pipes, and dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin. If you are outside, use caution and wear appropriate clothing. Do not forget about your pets!!!
Traveling in these conditions will be extremely unsafe! Any snow that melts during the daytime will refreeze into black ice at night, prolonging hazardous travel conditions. Remember that bridges freeze before roads do!! Everyone should finish up their storm preparations before this evening.
Hyde County Emergency Services will continue to monitor the forecast and issue advisories as appropriate.
