N.C. Highway 12 temporarily reopens to traffic north of Rodanthe
At 6:15 p.m. N.C. Highway 12 temporarily reopened to traffic from Rodanthe to Oregon Inlet, per an update from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Motorists should expect large areas of sand and water on the road, and are advised to drive with extreme caution, and to go slowly, as saltwater can damage vehicles.
N.C. Highway 12 will remain open as long as possible, however, another temporary road closure from Rodanthe to Oregon Inlet is probable with the next high tide cycle on Saturday evening, depending on ocean overwash and flooding. NCDOT crews will continue efforts to remove sand and water from the highway when it is safe to do so.
