Work is scheduled to begin Monday; single-lane closures to be in effect

The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has awarded an emergency contract to replace and repair sandbags along N.C. Highway 12 on Ocracoke Island.

The $489,000 contract was awarded to Barnhill Contracting of Rocky Mount.

The work involves replacing approximately 800 sandbags that were damaged or displaced during recent storms and restoring the protective barrier between N.C. 12 and the Atlantic Ocean on the northern end of Ocracoke Island.
