Tuesday, November 14, 2023, will be designated as an Early Release Day for all Dare County Schools. The purpose of this early dismissal is to allow students and staff to welcome the “Wall That Heals” – a traveling, three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., as it makes its route to the Soundside Event Center in Nags Head.

“By allowing for early dismissal, we aim to help everyone avoid anticipated traffic delays,” stated Dare County Schools in an update. “All schools will follow their respective early dismissal schedules, and there will be no after-school enrichment programs held.”

Members of the public are encouraged to stand safely along the sides of the road and wave American flags to greet the transport as it arrives. The memorial trailer is estimated to cross the William B. Umstead Bridge and pass through Manteo at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. The trailer will then continue to the Soundside Event Site.

After installation, the memorial will be on display 24 hours a day Nov. 16-19. To find more information about the “Wall that Heals”, please visit Dare County’s website.
