Ocean overwash was reported ahead of Tuesday morning’s 8:50 a.m. high tide on Hatteras Island, particularly in northern Buxton, Frisco, north of Hatteras Village, and on Pea Island in the “Canal Zone,” south of the Basnight Bridge.

A one-vehicle traffic accident was also reported on northern Pea Island at approximately 7:30 a.m. It is unknown if there are any injuries at this time, but additional delays should be expected due to emergency responders at the scene.

N.C. Highway 12 is open on Hatteras Island, however, blowing sand and water remain on the roadway in multiple locations. Travelers should use caution and watch for NCDOT vehicles as they work to clear the road.

The highway remains closed on northern Ocracoke Island from the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry terminal to the NPS Pony Pens due to multiple cycles of ocean overwash, including additional flooding reported on Tuesday morning.

Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry service remains suspended, however, the Ocracoke-Swan Quarter and Ocracoke-Cedar ferries resumed operations on Monday.

A second low pressure system is expected to impact the Outer Banks Wednesday night through Friday afternoon, bringing the potential for heavy rain, strong winds, additional coastal flooding, and dangerous marine conditions.

Areas of heavy rainfall will bring the potential for localized minor flooding to poor drainage areas starting Wednesday night, while strong winds are expected with gusts of 40-50 mph along the coast, particularly from Thursday evening into Friday morning.

Minor coastal flooding is possible, (soundside and oceanside), Thursday night into Friday, and additional localized ocean overwash is likely for areas with vulnerable dune structures.
