A funnel of wind that appeared to be a loosely-formed waterspout was spotted in Hatteras village on Friday afternoon, September 30.

Per a representative from the Hatteras Village Ferry terminal, the formation made contact with the main ferry terminal building, causing minor damage to the exterior of the structure and some of the outdoor fixtures.

The inside of the ferry terminal building was unharmed, and efforts were underway as of 6:00 p.m. on Friday to hopefully resume service for the Hatteras-Ocracoke vehicular ferry in the near future.

Though the waterspout had disappeared as of 5:30 p.m. on Friday, a Tornado Watch remains in effect for the entire Eastern North Carolina region, including the Outer Banks, until 10 p.m., per an update from the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City office.

The NWS advises all residents and visitors to ensure that they have multiple ways to receive warnings throughout the day and evening. This includes the NWS website at www.weather.gov/mhx, broadcast media, NOAA Weather Radio, and/or access to a cell phone and social media. (The NWS also automatically tweets out warnings via their Twitter page at www.twitter.com/nwsmoreheadcity.)
