U.S. Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet assists ferry passenger in need of medical attention
On Saturday, April 16, at 9:35 a.m., the U.S. Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet was notified that the dredge Ranger ran aground in Sloop channel, just north of Ocracoke Island. The station’s shallow water vessel CG24508 was redirected from their law enforcement mission to assess the incident.
Once on the scene, the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry Chicamacomico reported they had also run aground and had a medical concern on board. A woman was complaining of severe abdominal pain, and CG24508 came alongside and transferred two Coast Guard crew members aboard the ferry to respond to the situation. EMS was also notified, and began making their way to the Hatteras Inlet Station.
The ferry crew of the Chicamacomico lowered the woman down in their deployable small boat, where the CG24508 brought her on board and began making their way back to Station Hatteras Inlet. From there, she was transferred over to emergency services.
U.S. Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet provided details of the incident on social media, stating “Thank you to the crew of the Chicamacomico for their assistance in this case!”
The Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry resumed operations by Saturday afternoon, and the Chicamacomico was able to land at the Hatteras ferry docks.
