A winter storm is expected this week from Wednesday through Thursday, but the Outer Banks is currently forecasted to have mostly rain with a slight chance of snow showers and freezing rain, according to an update from the National Weather Service (NWS).

“This system has the potential to produce a wintry mix of precipitation across parts of [Eastern North Carolina], and a potential for some significant freezing rain,” stated the NWS. “Keep in mind that there is quite a bit of uncertainty this far out with regards to precipitation type and amounts, and this forecast will change over the coming days.”

Cold temperatures will return Monday and will linger for most of the week, with a chance of below-freezing temps in the high 20s and 30s on Thursday and Friday for Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands.

The public is advised to protect outdoor pets and sensitive vegetation as needed, and take precautionary steps to protect pipes from freezing, As temperatures drop, keeping a slow flow of water in faucets may help keep uninsulated pipes from freezing.
