HATTERAS– Carol Cole Cruikshank, 70, passed away on May 12, 2013, in her home,after her second battle with cancer. She was a loving wife, mother,grandmother, sister, teacher, and friend.
Carol was born Jan.16, 1943 in South Charleston, W. Va., to A.E. (Bud) and Imogene Cole.She graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in businessadministration, and later received an elementary education degree fromShepherd University.
Carol was a 42-year resident ofMartinsburg, W. Va., where she was an active member of both TrinityEpiscopal Church and the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. She wasa past president and director of Berkeley County United Way. For 12years, she was a devoted fifth grade teacher at Rosemont Elementary andOrchard View Elementary. She cared greatly for her students, whoenjoyed her caring nature as much as her sense of humor. InMartinsburg, she was also passionate about photography and gardening.
Carolwas a three-year resident of Hatteras village, where she quickly mademany friends throughout the community. She tutored students at CapeHatteras Elementary, volunteered for the Graveyard of the AtlanticMuseum, was a regular fixture at the weekly Hatteras village fish fry,and made scrapbooks and quilts in anticipation of visits from hergrandchildren, whom she loved dearly.
Carol is survived by herloving husband of 46 years, Dr. Edward C. Cruikshank; by her brother,Gary Cole, and sister-in-law, Nancy Cole, of Charlotte, N.C.; by herdaughter, Sarah Cruikshank Ockman, and son-in-law, Howard Ockman, ofBelgrade, Serbia; by her son, Alex M. Cruikshank, and daughter-in-law,Jillan Lindstrom Cruikshank, of Black Rock, Conn., and by her fourwonderful grandchildren, Caleb Ockman, Anabel Ockman, Reuben Ockman andJack Cruikshank. She is predeceased by her second brother, David Cole,of Macon, Ga.
The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. onMonday, May 20, at Hatteras United Methodist Church, in Hatterasvillage with the Rev. Anne Kersting West presiding. After the service,family and friends are invited to the Cruikshank home for a reception.In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Dare County Hospice.
Thecommittal service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22, atTrinity Episcopal Church, in Martinsburg, W.Va., where her ashes willbe placed in the columbarium, with the Rev. Julie Harris presiding.
