Alice Mae Midgett Etheridge McChesney, 99, passed away peacefully ather home in Fuquay-Varina, N.C., on Sept. 13, 2016. She was thedaughter of the late John Julius Guthrie Midgett and Rhoda MissouriGray Midgett. She was the 10th of their 11 children, all of whichare now deceased. She was the widow of Hugh Sharpe McChesney andis survived by her three children, Van Buren Webb Etheridge and wife,Elizabeth Anne Etheridge, Susan McChesney Lackey and husband, CharlesEdward Lackey, and Julia Blanche McChesney Stoddard and husband, BrittLeonard Stoddard; and two grandchildren, Matthew Britt Stoddard andfianc�, Carrie Porter, and Adam Leonard Stoddard and wife, SheenaMurnaghan Stoddard.
Alice was a born on Aug. 15, 1917 in Salvo and at age 7 moved toManteo, where she lived until her marriage with Hugh. Alice andHugh settled in Charlotte where she helped in his business. Shewas proud of 28 years of service to various PTAs while raising herchildren. After retiring, Alice and Hugh moved back to Manteowhere they lived for 22 years. In Manteo, Alice worked at theElizabethan Gardens as a hostess, was an avid bridge player, a memberof Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, and a member of the RebekahLodge #52, serving as Noble Grand for three years. When herhusband’s health declined, she moved to Cary, N.C., to be close to herdaughter, Julia. She lived the remainder of her life there and atWindsor Point Retirement Community in Fuquay-Varina. Throughouther 99 years of life, she was most happy when she was with family andfriends.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, at TwifordColony Chapel with Rev. Dr. John Dutton officiating. Burial willfollow at Manteo Cemetery. The family will receive friends andrelatives on Friday evening, Sept. 16, from 6 until 8 p.m. at thefuneral home.
