BUXTON — Velton Keith Gaskins, 87, died on Saturday, July 2, 2016, atSentara Virginia Beach General Hospital after a brief illness. BornDec. 28, 1928, in Hatteras, he was the son of the late Ebbie Gaskinsand Rosa Austin Gaskins. Keith was preceded in death by his loving wifeof 56 years, Allene Quidley Gaskins, who died in 2006. After servingsix years in the United States Air Force, he and Allene moved toRichmond, Va., where he was employed by AT&T Long Lines Divisionuntil his retirement in 1984. Keith was a member of Buxton UnitedMethodist Church, as well as the Cape Hatteras Masonic Lodge #698 AF& AM, where he served as a Master Mason for 27 years and held theoffice of treasurer for over 23 years.
Keith is survived by a brother, Eldon Gaskins of Buxton; two daughters,Brenda Darden and husband, Robert (Bob), who he thought of as a son, ofKitty Hawk and Carol Gilliam of Edmonton, Ky.; three grandsons,Christopher Scott Darden and wife, Karen, of Manakin-Sabot, Va., MSgt.Garry Gilliam II and wife, Darrah, of USAF/Ladson, S.C., and GarlandGilliam and wife, Holly, of Edmonton, Ky.; three granddaughters, ShellyDarden May and husband, Chris, of Brooklyn, N.Y., Christina GilliamPedigo of Glasgow, Ky., and Connie Gilliam Ferguson of Marengo, Ohio;six great-granddaughters, Audrey Darden, Caroline Darden, CaitlynPedigo, Savannah Ferguson, Madison Ferguson, and Hailey Gilliam; onegreat-grandson, Trenton Ferguson; and numerous nieces and nephews.Along with his parents and wife, Keith was preceded in death by twobrothers, Walton Gaskins and Benjamin Gaskins.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6, at BuxtonUnited Methodist Church with Rev. Toni Wood officiating. Burial withMasonic Rites will follow at Quidley Cemetery. The family will receivefriends and relatives at the church one hour prior to the service.
