Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum hosts holiday events

— The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, located at 59200 Museum Drive in Hatteras, has two events remaining on its 2019 schedule. The first, in November, invites current and prospective volunteers to meet with staff and other volunteers to learn about opportunities to support the museum’s work.

  • Volunteer Luncheon
    Current and prospective volunteers are invited to come to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras on Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. and gather for lunch and a talk. Reservations are required. For information or reservations, call 252-986-0723 or email maryellen.riddle@ncdcr.gov

The second will help those in Hatteras prepare for the holidays, with festive crafts, entertainment and refreshments offered throughout the day.

  • Holidays on Hatteras 2019
    Holidays on Hatteras is a day-long annual holiday event with children’s crafts, live entertainment, and festive refreshments. It will be held Dec. 14 from noon to 5 p.m. Shoppers receive a discount in the museum shop with a donation for the food bank. The event, sponsored by Friends of the Graveyard of the Atlantic and Hatteras Village Civic Association, is free and open to the public. About the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum

The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras is named in honor of thousands of shipwrecks that sank off North Carolina’s coast. The museum is dedicated to the preservation and presentation of the state’s coastal culture and maritime history, which includes these shipwrecks, this repository of history. The vessels are the centerpiece of rich relationships to piracy, war, (Revolutionary, Civil and World Wars I and II), lifesaving, commerce and coastal living. It is filled with related artifacts, which include remnants of the earliest known shipwreck found in North Carolina waters, dating to 1650, objects from the USS Monitor, the Queen Anne’s Revenge, and the USS Huron. The North Carolina Maritime Museum system is comprised of the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras, the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort and the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport. All three museums are part of the Division of State History Museums in the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
