Tug Boat Tips Over Near Bonner Bridge; No Injuries Reported
A tug boat was flipped to its side on the southern end of the old Bonner Bridge at Oregon Inlet on Sunday afternoon, however, OBX Today reports that the U.S. Coast Guard Station at Oregon Inlet stated that no one is injured and crews are working on a plan for removing the vessel.
Per sources close to the incident, a barge in Oregon Inlet became dangerously close to the old Bonner Bridge, which is in the process of being demolished. The tugboat went to secure the barge and ran aground, and was subsequently rolled over on its side with the strong surf and currents.
The Bonner Bridge closed in February with the opening of the new Marc Basnight Bridge spanning across Oregon Inlet. Demolition of the old bridge has been underway since, and is expected to continue into 2020.
