Scott Dawson to Join LWV for January “Hot Topics” Event

January 27, 2021 @ 1:00 pm EST

The Dare League of Women Voters will spotlight local author Scott Dawson, a Hatteras native and amateur archaeologist, to share recent discoveries that are drawing international attention regarding our local history. League members and the public are invited to join a ZOOM session on Wednesday, January 27 at 1:00 p.m. for a discussion of Mr. Dawson’s latest book, The Lost Colony and Hatteras Island published in June 2020. To register, email Fran Kapinos, League co-president, at fkapinos@aol.com, and she will send you a ZOOM link.

Mr. Dawson is President of the Croatoan Archaeological Society. Founded about ten years ago, it has made fascinating findings at the site where the colonists are thought to have settled after leaving Roanoke Island.  Evidence and artifacts have been unearthed during excavations under the direction of archaeologists from the University of Bristol in England who conduct research with local residents. Dawson’s book and others in recent years are shedding new light on the evolving story of the first colonists.  Recently, the topic has been a focus in periodicals including National Geographic and Science Magazine.More and more theories are emerging amidst the renewed interest in this puzzle. Evidence unearthed by the First Colony Foundation (Durham, NC) suggests the colonists moved 50 miles west, or that they split into at least two groups, one going to Hatteras and the other going 50 miles inland into what is now Bertie County.

Join us to learn more about the scientific facts revealing the truth about what links the Lost Colony of Roanoke to Hatteras as we discuss the unraveling mystery of the people who settled here long before us.

The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan political organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy.  Membership is open to both men and women, and students are encouraged to join.
