Elsa could bring heavy rains, tropical-storm-force wind gusts later in the week
After several days of uncertainty, the forecast for Tropical Storm Elsa has become a bit more clear as of Monday morning, with a higher probability that the track of the storm will pass through or near Eastern N.C. on Thursday, per a recent update from the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City office.
Elsa will be moving quite quickly, and should clear the region by Thursday evening. While no specific wind speeds or rain amounts are available yet, there is a threat for some tropical-storm-force wind gusts, (or gusts of 39 mph or higher), along with periods of heavy rain and flash flooding.
Depending on the exact track, isolated severe storms are possible, including tornadoes. Large breaking waves and strong rip currents are also a threat for later in the week.
Residents and visitors are urged to pay close attention to the forecast over the coming days, and to review their hurricane plans and supplies as the 2021 hurricane season begins.
