Alligator River Bridge Renovation Now Complete
A major renovation of the 59-year-old Alligator River Bridge in Tyrrell and Dare counties was completed this week.
During the $16.7 million, 17-month project, the bridge received a new epoxy deck overlay to prevent water from seeping off the road surface onto the bridge structure underneath it, as well as joint replacements, repairs to the concrete superstructure, and mechanical and electrical rehabilitation of the bridge’s swing span.
The bridge on U.S. Highway 64 is an important route for travelers to and from the Outer Banks, as well as for storm evacuations. The renovation work will help ensure that the bridge remains safe and operable until a replacement can be built.
