Minor coastal flooding possible on Sunday and Monday morning
A developing coastal low pressure system will affect the Outer Banks area on Sunday and Monday, bringing localized heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and the potential for minor coastal flooding along the soundside, per a Saturday morning update from the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City office.
Wind gusts up to 30-40 mph on Sunday and Monday mornings are currently forecast, with moderate to heavy rainfall of 1-2 inches for Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, and localized higher amounts. A brief, isolated tornado or two is possible for Down East Carteret County and the southern Outer Banks on Sunday morning.
On Monday morning, gusty W to NW winds will result in a minor coastal flooding threat to the soundside Outer Banks, also with 1-2 feet inundation above ground level. On both mornings, minor flooding of very low-lying roadways, parking lots, and properties is possible.
