MANTEO — Betty Jane Wilson Butler, a beloved member of the community, passed away on July 20, 2023, at the age of 96. Born in Baltimore, MD on August 5, 1926, Betty lived a life full of compassion, dedication, and selflessness.
After completing her education, Betty embarked on a fulfilling career as a registered nurse, providing care and comfort to those in need. She dedicated many years of her life to this noble profession before retiring and transitioning into a new phase of her life.
Outside of her work, Betty was an active contributor to her community. She was very involved with Meals on Wheels, ensuring that those who were unable to prepare their own meals could still enjoy nutritious and delicious food. Additionally, she generously donated numerous books to the public library, fostering a love for reading and knowledge among the residents.
Betty’s faith played a significant role in her life, as she was an active attendee of St. Andrew’s By-the-Sea Episcopal Church. Her involvement and devotion to her faith community brought her great joy and provided her with a sense of spiritual fulfillment.
Betty was preceded in death by her loving husband, Thomas Latane Butler, her daughter, Susan West, her parents, May and William Smith Wilson, and her brother William Wilson.
Betty leaves behind a rich legacy and fond memories in the hearts of her surviving family and friends. She is survived by her two sons, Thomas Butler, Jr. and William Butler, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren who will continue to honor her memory through their own lives.
A memorial service to celebrate Betty’s life and the profound impact she had on others will be held at a later date. During this time, family and friends will gather to pay their respects and share stories of her remarkable life.
Betty Jane Wilson Butler will be remembered as a compassionate, devoted nurse, a dedicated volunteer, and a faithful member of her church. Her selfless acts of kindness and unwavering love for her family and community will forever be an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in peace.
