NAGS HEAD — The family of Michael Andrew Gard of Nags Head, NC, is saddened to announce his sudden passing on July 21, 2023, at the age of 71. He was born October 12, 1951, in Norfolk, VA.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Doris O. Gard. He is survived by two brothers, Jerry (Tammy) Gard and Kenneth (Cathy) Gard; niece, Michelle (Kevin) Haflin; nephews, Jeff (Nina) Gard, Jason (Melissa) Gard, Chory (Joana) Gard, Brandon (Ashley) Gard, Paul (Amy) Perkinson, and Zippy (Heather) Gard; five great-nephews; three great-nieces; special cousin, Brenda Belote; extended family; and a very special companion, Elaine Piddington.
Mike spent his early years exploring the outdoors and waters of Colington. After the family moved to Nags Head, he enjoyed surfing the Atlantic and sand surfing on Jockey’s Ridge. Mike was an avid fisherman, competing in many tournaments with lifelong friends of the Kill Devil Hill Anglers, Crooked Hooks, and Rising Tides. He also enjoyed hunting with family and friends with the Elmwood Hunt Club (oh the stories…). Mike also liked taking his boat out on fishing excursions and leisure rides to watch the sunset. He had recently started camping and enjoying trips to Ocracoke and Cape Lookout with friends.
Mike attended Manteo High School, graduating with the class of ’71. He attended Pitt Technological Community College. After honing his craft of woodworking at Davis Boatworks in Wanchese, he struck out on his own opening “Honey-Do” Handyman Service, serving the Outer Banks community for many years.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to your charity of choice.
