January 28, 1942 – November 11, 2023
WANCHESE — John H. “Sonny” Reber III, 81, of Wanchese, NC closed his eyes for the last time on November 11, 2023, on the same property where he first opened them. He was born on January 28, 1942, to the late Catherine and John H. “Johnny” Reber, Jr. in his grandparents’ home.
Sonny spent most of his youth on the docks in Mill Landing learning about fishing and crabbing with whom he called the best teachers he ever had. He was drafted into the US Army and served his country honorably while stationed in Germany. Sonny returned home to life as a commercial fisherman. He always said he had worked with some of the best captains and crews on the water. His fondest memory was swordfishing with Capt. Phil Ruhle. Sonny was a cook, deckhand, and a captain; he loved fishing.
Sonny never met a stranger and would help anyone in need if he could. The only requirement to be his friend was to have a good sense of humor because he did. Sonny was a jack of all trades from construction, welding, and mechanics; he had learned to do it all. Later in life and thanks to his uncle, he started a new career as an engineer for Allied Marine Towing Co. and within a year he advanced to chief. You could take Sonny out of Wanchese but he stilled fished, catching whatever the gulf had to offer from the stern of the tug. After almost 20 years, it was time to retire and come home.
Sonny leaves his wife Ginger of 46 years; daughters, Dana Lisenby (Jamie) and Candy Basnight (Benji Cogar); son John Michael; stepson Eddie Midgett; grandchildren Hunter Basnight, Olivia Lisenby, and Elliot Lisenby to cherish his memories. As well as his siblings Pearline Getz of PA, Gwen Quidley of Manteo, and Cathy McPhee (Randy) of Grandy; brothers Crawford (Vicki) of East Lake and Louie of Wanchese; his uncle Louie and aunt Jean Payne; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Ann Mason and Jean R. Herrin; and brother Bradford Reber.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Adoration Hospice for the care shown to Sonny during his final days.
In keeping with Sonny’s wishes, there will be no service. If you wish to do something in honor or memory, please make a donation a charity of your choice.
