Dare County announces New Year’s Day closures and trash collection changes

All Dare County offices and facilities will be closed on Monday, January 1, 2024, in observance of the New Year’s Day holiday.

The Dare County C&D Landfill, Buxton Transfer Station, and Manteo Recycle Yard will also therefore be closed on Monday, January 1, 2024. These sites will reopen on Tuesday, January 2, 2023.

Dare County Public Works—which provides trash collection for the unincorporated areas of Dare County, as well as the Town of Kitty Hawk—has announced a revised collection schedule for the week of Monday, January 1, 2024, through Friday, January 5, 2024 in observance of the New Year’s holiday.

Residential trash collection for the week of Monday, January 1, 2024 through Friday, January 5, 2024 will be as follows:

  • Monday, January 1, 2024: Closed – No trash collection
  • Tuesday, January 2, 2024: Kitty Hawk, Colington, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras
  • Wednesday, January 3, 2024: Manteo, Wanchese, Manns Harbor, East Lake, Stumpy Point, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avon
  • Thursday, January 4, 2024: Kitty Hawk, Colington, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras
  • Friday, January 5, 2024: Manteo, Wanchese, Manns Harbor, East Lake, Stumpy Point, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avon

Commercial trash collection will take place on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, and Friday, January 5, 2024. Normal commercial trash collection schedules will resume on Monday, January 8, 2024. 

REMINDER: The Dare County Public Works Department only provides trash collection for the Town of Kitty Hawk and the unincorporated areas of Dare County. Unincorporated Dare County does not include areas within a town’s limits.
