Outer Banks Hotline will once again host “Ribbon on the Ridge” on Purple Thursday, October 17, at 10 a.m. on Jockey’s Ridge in Nags Head to increase awareness about domestic violence.
Ribbon on the Ridge began in 2014, but the event was paused temporarily during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year, as in previous years, a 300-foot ribbon will be unfurled on the ridge and held by Hotline team members – and Outer Banks community members – as a reading of names is performed to honor those who have lost their lives to domestic violence in our state this year.
Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behaviors used to gain or maintain power and control over a partner and is the leading cause of injury to women in the U.S. It is often delivered along with verbal, emotional, and/or economic abuse. Individuals of any race, age, gender, sexuality, religion, education level, or economic status can be a victim or perpetrator.
“We’re calling on our community members to come out and support Ribbon on the Ridge, a unique and meaningful symbol of our commitment to end domestic violence in our community,” said Bronwyn Thornton, Executive Director of Outer Banks Hotline.
The Hotline team also encourages everyone to wear purple on October 17 and to post pictures of themselves and others on their social media platforms to increase awareness and demonstrate their support of the victims and survivors of this social epidemic.
If you are in crisis as a result of domestic violence, sexual assault, and/or human trafficking, call Hotline’s 24-hour crisis line at (252) 473-3366. For more information about this event or Hotline’s services, visit OBHotline.org or call (252) 473-5121.
