WAVES — Robert Lee Newton of Waves, NC went to be with his Lord and Shepherd on November 27, 2024. He was born on July 3, 1954, to Dorothy Libby Newton and Robert A. Newton. Upon graduation from Alamosa High School in Alamosa, CO, he enlisted in the United States Navy.
He honorably served aboard the USS Oriskany as a Boiler Technician 2nd class during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation medal and the Vietnam Service medal.
Following his service, he spent time working in Texas before making Hatteras Island, where he had been fondly used to visiting, his permanent home. He worked many years in construction, primarily drywall and painting. He was a member of Fair Haven United Methodist Church and was devoted to supporting youth ministries. He became involved with the Outer Banks American Legion and VFW while residing at Peak Resources Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Nags Head, NC, since 2016.
He leaves dear friends in the Tri-Villages of Hatteras Island and many close friends at Peak Resources, where he was an active participant of Resident Council, Bible study, Bingo, puzzle group, and many social events.
Passing before him were his mother and brother, David Newton. He is survived by his father, Robert; his sister, Carol (Randy) Wrinkle of Aurora, MO; and his brother, Arthur Newton of Pierce City, MO.
Inurnment will take place at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA, following full military honors.
