KILL DEVIL HILLS — Lola C. Thompson, 90, passed way of natural causes January 9, 2025. Lola was predeceased by her husband, Carl Ray Thompson; her son, Carl Robert Thompson; her parents, Gordon and Lena; as well as her three siblings.
Lola was born in Ashland, Ohio and grew up in Point Pleasant, WV. After completing high school, Lola went on to attend Marshall College (now Marshall University). During these years, she met and married Carl Ray and the family embarked on many years of military travel across the country; including stops in Charleston, South Carolina, Key West, Florida, and southern California.
Following Carl’s Navy retirement, they made their home in Virginia Beach, Virginia. There, she completed her teaching degree and found employment in the Virginia Beach Public School system, where she taught first grade for over 20 years. Recently, Lola moved to Kill Devil Hills to be closer to her daughters, Cyd, Susan and Laura.
In addition to her daughters, Cindy “Cyd” Dough of Kill Devil Hills,NC Susan Wyche of Frisco, NC, and Laura Harrell (Norman) of Colington, NC. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Holly Alligood (Kevin) and Lauren Brinkley (Travis); five great-grandchildren, Jax and Julian Alligood, and Mason, Waverly and Everly Brinkley; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family members.
The family is honoring Lola’s preference for cremation and plans for a private memorial are pending. Expressions of sympathy are welcome at www.gallopfuneralservices.com. Gallop Funeral Services was entrusted with arrangements.
