A committee of North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission members will meet Thursday to develop a definition of a commercial fisherman.
The meeting starts at 1 p.m. in the Division of Marine Fisheries’ Central District Office, 5285 U.S. 70 West, Morehead City.
Nancy Fish with the Marine Fisheries Commission told Coastal Review Online that the “commission has looked into this issue of establishing additional criteria or further defining a commercial fisherman numerous times throughout the years.”
Fish explained that during its meeting Nov. 15-16, 2017, in Kitty Hawk, the commission passed a motion to ask the chairman to appoint a committee of commission members to develop a definition of a commercial fisherman for consideration during the meeting Feb. 14-15 at the Blockade Runner in Wrightsville Beach.
Fish said that while the committee is not taking public comment at the Jan. 11 meeting, the public will have the opportunity to comment on the committee recommendations during the February business meeting in Wrightsville Beach.
An effort was made in September 2016 and a list of recommendations were sent to the General Assembly.
