First-ever Ocracoke Working Waterman’s Festival will be held on Saturday, October 21; Schedule of events announced
The first-ever Ocracoke Working Waterman’s Festival, which is hosted by the Ocracoke Preservation Society (OPS), will be held on Saturday, October 21, from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on the grounds of the Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum.
The goal of the festival is to shine a spotlight on Ocracoke’s rich history – and continuing tradition – of working on the water.
Since the first inhabitants of the island, Ocracokers have made their living on the water, from piloting ships through the treacherous Ocracoke Inlet, to fishing, crabbing, clamming, oyster harvesting, duck hunting, and decoy carving, all of which continue today, handed down through the generations.
The festival will celebrate these traditions with booths and exhibits with the watermen themselves, porch talks throughout the day highlighting each tradition, a traditional Ocracoke Fish Fry, T-shirts, posters, and a silent auction, in addition to many other activities.
“Mark your calendar now for this exciting new event for OPS and the Ocracoke Community, and let’s honor and thank our many Working Watermen,” stated the OPS in an earlier announcement.
