CHEC has presented two local non-profits with grant money made possible through the CoBank Sharing Success Grant Program. CoBank is a national cooperative bank that serves rural areas. The Cape Hatteras United Methodist Men (CHUMM) and Port Health Services were the recipients of this year’s grant money.
The cooperative gave $5,000 to CHUMM, which was met with an additional $5,000 from CoBank, to help support the organization’s relief efforts in the wake of COVID-19. The group is made up of men and women volunteers who provide assistance to those in need on Hatteras Island. CHUMM also operates the Cape Hatteras Food Pantry and is instrumental in providing early response to storm and flood victims and has been actively helping those in need during the pandemic.
The cooperative also gave $2,500 to Port Health Services, which was met with an additional $2,500 from CoBank, to support the newly opened facility in Hatteras Village. Port Health Services works to improve the lives, health and well-being of individuals and families dealing with substance use and mental health disorders by providing a comprehensive range of services. This donation was made in memory of Sandy Gray, who worked at CHEC for
over 40 years. Sandy and his wife Jackie were founding members of the Yellow House Ministry, which shares a similar mission as Port Health. The Yellow House group was an integral part in advocating for the opening of the Port Health office in Hatteras Village.
These donations were made possible through CoBank’s “Sharing Success” charitable contribution program, which celebrates the vital role that cooperatives play in individual communities across the country. Concern for community is a long-standing cooperative principle. CHEC is happy to join CoBank in support of these worthy causes, as the cooperative works to provide value to members and support to the communities on Hatteras Island.
