At the October 7 Dare County Board of Commissioners meeting in Manteo, NOAA’s Monitor National Marine Sanctuary presented Cape Hatteras Secondary Principal, Beth Rooks, and teacher, Clayton Tiderman, with a check for $3,000 to continue their work to promote recycling.
Cape Hatteras Secondary was recognized as an Ocean Guardian School-Year 1, for successfully fulfilling all requirements of the 2018-2019 grant awarded last fall to Mr. Tiderman. Last year’s grant for $3,000 funded the implementation of the school’s first recycling program, and during the year, the students collected over 5,000 gallons of recyclable materials. This year, Mr. Tiderman is awarded an additional $3,000 grant for the installation of a water refill station to reduce the number of single-use plastic bottles used by students and teachers. The work of Mr. Tiderman and his students demonstrates their commitment to protect and conserve the local watershed, the world’s ocean, and special ocean areas.
