The Dare County Library has announced its upcoming 2021 Summer Reading Program, a free, fun and educational experience that will officially begin on Tuesday, June 22, 2021.
The Summer Reading Program is designed to help children maintain the reading skills that they developed throughout the school year so they are better prepared to enter the classroom once school resumes again in the fall. Parents can rest easy knowing that the Summer Reading Program is both fun and educational—and it is also flexible in order to accommodate children of all ages.
The theme of this year’s Summer Reading Program is “Tails and Tales!” and many fun and exciting programs have been planned. Children can sign up for the Summer Reading Program during regular library hours beginning on June 22, 2021, or any day thereafter. The program will last a total of 54 days, from its start date on June 22, 2021, to its last day, which will take place on August 13, 2021.
Every participating child that reads for 15 minutes or more each day for at least 30 days during this period will receive a brand-new book of their choice from the list of prize books that are provided courtesy of the Dare County Library Foundation.
This year, weekly programs will be held outside in a shady area or under a tent. The Dare County Library is limiting weekly program participation to children that are within the stated age range for the program; however, older or younger siblings can browse for library books with their parents while the programs are being held. In the event of inclement weather, the activity for that particular day will be cancelled. If you have any questions, call your Dare County Library location that day for more information.

The Dare County Library’s Summer Reading Program is planned to promote participation in weekly programs scheduled at every library location within Dare County, as well as for individual participation on a child’s own time. Children may stop by the library any time their local location is open to report and record their reading achievement.
The Dare County Library wants children of all ages to improve their reading and listening skills during the “Tails and Tales!” Summer Reading Program. We welcome and encourage your child to borrow books from the library, use their own books from home or read e-books from the Dare County Library’s extensive collection, including TumbleBooks Library, NC Kids Digital Library and Cloud Library. These items are available at www.DareNC.com/VirtualLibrary.
Major funding for the 2021 “Tails and Tales! Summer Reading Program comes from the Dare County Library Foundation. The Dare County Library Foundation was established in 2002 to enhance library services and collections. The mission of the Dare County Library Foundation is to improve the quality of services that the Dare County Library provides to the community. By securing resources to support library programs and projects not normally met by public funding, the library can grow and better meet the needs of the Dare County community. The Dare County Library hopes that parents, grandparents and caregivers will give their child, grandchild, niece or nephew the opportunity to discover or rediscover the wholesome enjoyment that reading for pleasure can give to a young person as they discover “Tails and Tales!” at the Dare County Library this summer.
