The Dare Soil & Water Conservation District awarded the inaugural Salt Marsh Award to Erin Fleckenstein on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, during a short ceremony with her peers and colleagues. The Salt Marsh Award was founded to recognize individuals who make outstanding contributions to the conservation of natural resources in Dare County, with a particular focus on combating erosion, runoff, and other water quality issues.
Fleckenstein has served on the Soil & Water Conservation Board for over a decade and was instrumental in preserving the soil and water district during the COVID-19 pandemic. Fleckenstein now heads the oyster program for the North Carolina Coastal Federation and has been involved with the implementation of many living shorelines in Dare County, including Moor Shore Road in Kitty Hawk, Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head, and Durant’s Point in Hatteras Village.
