As the spring and summer visitor season approaches, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is in desperate need of volunteers to assist at the front desk, and to help keep the Hatteras village landmark wide open all year long.
“We are at a critical stage at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum regarding having enough volunteers to run the front desk,” stated Mary Ellen Riddle, Education Curator for the museum. “Without them, the staff cannot do their jobs, and we are entering the season where we run programs for the public making it even more difficult for a small staff to be at the front desk.”
All volunteers need to qualify for a volunteer position is a friendly personality. No experience or history knowledge is needed, but both will certainly be gained by working at the Hatteras museum.
The shifts are only three hours long, and openings are available on Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday morning and afternoon, Friday afternoon, and some Saturday afternoons. (The museum is closed on Sundays and state holidays.)
Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and available volunteer shifts are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
“Please help us so that we can continue sharing the maritime history and culture of the North Carolina Outer Banks with our visitors,” stated Riddle. “We are flexible and treat our volunteers with dignity and respect and are very grateful for their vital help.”
