May is National Mental Health Awareness Month and NAMI OBX, an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) announces its inaugural walk NAMIwalk OBX to be held on Saturday, May, in Kill Devil Hills, beginning at Aviation Park.
This awareness walk will follow a safe route and allow residents to walk and talk with NAMI OBX volunteers and fellow community members about mental illness in the Outer Banks and the free support programs and educational services NAMI OBX offers to support already established efforts. Programs are offered for adults and adolescents living with mental health issues in our communities from Corolla to Ocracoke. There is no cost to walk, but donations are welcome. The walk will be 3 miles. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the walk at 9 a.m., following a short presentation. Several local area nonprofits will also be on hand with information on their services.
NAMI, established in 1979, is the nation’s largest grassroots nonprofit mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.
