Cape Hatteras Secondary School decks the halls with “Trees for the Community” project
On Monday December 2, the foyer at Cape Hatteras Secondary School (CHSS) was transformed into a winter wonderland, thanks to a team effort by students and staff.
In the school’s 2nd annual “Trees for the Community” event, CHSS clubs, teams, and classes decorated artificial Christmas trees that will later be donated to members of the community to enjoy for the holidays.
“We are so proud of this project and the efforts of CHSS educators and students to make the holidays warmer and brighter for our friends and neighbors.” said CHSS’ Coach Keith Durham in an announcement about the project.
“Students and staff will vote on their favorite trees throughout the week, and then on Thursday, votes are tallied and a champion tree is crowned. The CHSS band tree won the competition in 2023, but the voting has changed for this year, with votes being cast in loose change.
“The tree that raises the most money will be the winning tree, and all of the money raised through the project will go to buy toys for the Hatteras Island Angel Gift program. The trees will be disbursed to the community through local churches and civic organizations in the coming days.”
While the trees will find new local homes in the near future, for now, students, staff, and visitors at CHSS can enjoy a festive dose of the holidays, thanks to this school-wide project.
