Hatteras Island Hosting Several Art-Centric Events on Memorial Day Weekend
Memorial Day Weekend is traditionally the unofficial kick-off to the summer season on Hatteras Island, but this year, it also marks the launch of several art-centric events that will recur throughout the summertime weeks to come.
With distinctive artists, live music, fresh food, and a limitless collection of handcrafted and unique goodies on full display, these community events are adding a big dose of local color to the island’s arts scene.
So carve out some time on Memorial Day Weekend to discover these two artful events where local talent shines.
Light House Local Artists Show – Friday, May 24
Light House Local Artists will be hosting a Light House Arts & Crafts event on Friday, May 24, which is an opportunity for visitors to discover a wealth of talented artisans on Hatteras Island at a single Buxton locale.
Held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Buxton Family Life Center, (which is across the street from the tennis courts at the Cape Hatteras Secondary School), the series of shows will be held throughout the summer, and will also feature concessions provided by local non-profit organizations.
Expect to discover a wealth of treasures at the inside event shop, which can include bakery goodies, intricate glass designs, shell and sea glass-inspired treasures, coastal artworks, stunning beach textiles, and so much more.

Rock the Cape’s Island Art Show – May 27, 2019
This year’s 7th Annual Rock The Cape Festival will extend for two weeks, and the official start of the event is the Island Art Show on Monday, May 27, at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Center.
The Island Art Show will be happening from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Memorial Day Monday, and more than 20 local artists will be at the sunny site showcasing their work, with live music provided by Rory Kelleher.
The Island Art Show is part of a series of art events held throughout the year, with upcoming shows scheduled for July 5, August 29, and October 10. Each Island Art Show benefits a different local community cause and organization, and for the Memorial Day event, proceeds from artist booth fees will go to the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation in honor and memory of Carolyn Schena of Studio 12.
Admission to this indoor/outdoor art show is free, and all visitors are welcome to explore the myriad of goodies on full display.
