Ocracoke Community Pool Association to hold fundraising event on March 23

The Ocracoke Community Pool Association will hold a “Soup and Sandwich” fundraising event from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 23 in the Community Center.
Along with lunch there will be a bake sale and raffles.
The proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit the association’s quest to raise enough money to buy land for a community pool — for exercise, recreation, rehabilitation, and, most importantly, water safety, said Grace West, a member of the board of directors.
“It is surprising how many people are non-swimmers that both live on and visit Ocracoke,” she said. “The ocean and sound provide boogie boarding, surfing, fishing, kayaking opportunities but not an easy place for people to learn basic water safety.”
The pool would provide rehabilitation and fitness opportunities for all ages.
The rehabilitation benefits from pool therapy for injury, joint replacement and arthritis are well known.
“Simply walking in a swimming pool can build strength and balance,” West said. “Recreation enjoyment in a safe (NO rip currents!) swimming pool cannot be minimized.”
The OCPA board will offer memberships to be sold once the pool is built.
First, land is needed, and donations will enable OCPA to move forward.
To donate, send checks to OCPA, PO Box 1371, Ocracoke, NC 27960. For information, email ocpa23@yahoo.com.
