Ocracoke’s annual Sand Sculpture contest attracts 32 entries
Ocracoke Island’s annual Sandcastle Contest was held on Tuesday morning, July 4, and the popular event on Ocracoke’s Lifeguarded Beach attracted 32 individual and group entries, per an overview of the festivities from the Ocracoke Observer.
A panel of judges chose the best sculpture in four categories: Individual 12 & under, Group 12 & under, Individual 13 & over, and Group 13 & over, and spectators on the beach awarded the prize for Best in Show.
Popular themes in this year’s contest included traditional castles, but there was also a wave of sea creatures, patriotic displays, and other inspired and temporary sand artworks to wow the crowd.
The five winners from this year’s Sand Sculpture contest are listed below:

- Individual 12 & under: #8 Crab, James Husted, Charlotte, NC
- Group 12 & under: #20 The Life of the Sea, Goldie Volotovskaia & Ford Sumner, Ocracoke, NC
- Individual 13 & over: Iguana Peace, Dave Manthey, Monroe Falls, Ohio
- Group 13 & over: Turtle stripes (leatherback), Meredith Burnett group, Garnet, Pa.
- Best in Show (by popular vote): Red, White & Bluey, by the Barbour Family, Charlottsville, Va.
